Meet Arhaan. He is part of Team Cumberlanders who created the winning project for Moonhack 2023, Space Shoes. We had a chance to ask Arhaan some questions about his experience with Moonhack, and his team.

Who is Team Cumberlanders?

We ‘Team Cumberlanders’ are a group of grade 3 (2023) friends going to Year 4 from Aitken College. The team name is derived from our year-level Cumberland.

Tell us about your participation in Moonhack 2023

Team Cumberlanders thinks that anyone who likes coding will like the Moonhack challenge. We know that because we liked the challenge, coded, and won Moonhack 2023. It’s a mix of fun, enthusiasm, hard work, and determination.

Moonhack is an opportunity for everyone to come together, work as a team, and enjoy. Thanks to the Moonhack organisers for giving us this wonderful opportunity.

How did you come up with your project idea?

Team Cumberlanders got the idea and inspiration from one of the team member’s parents, Mrs. Ruby P. She is the one who initiated this project and guided the team. Also thanks to all the team members’ parents for their care and support by bringing us together over the weekends until we finished the project.

The winning project!

The judges identified many reasons to support this project being selected as a winner. The main reasons were the introduction of 2 separate chapters in the project; a story introduction and astronaut feedback about the shoes created, and then a game at the end where the astronaut has left their shoes behind and needs help to retrieve them.

One comment from the judging panel that sums up the game is, “We decided on this project because it was very interactive and fun. It was also educational. It was very fun, and we got some laughter out of it.”

Other judges commented on the use of if-then statements and broadcasts to tell a story while simultaneously incorporating 2 games into one project. Across all parts of the project, styling was kept the same, and the astronaut became the hero of the project.

By introducing extra parts to the project Team Cumberlanders were able to showcase their unique style and the depth of their coding ability.

Happy coding.

Kaye
